On June 1, the Rev. Mark Sprowl began serving Laurel as Covenant Pastor. The office of Covenant Pastor is one where the pastor is called to serve by a church’s session instead of by the congregation at large. Mark will serve initially for a term of six months after which by mutual decision of the covenant pastor and the session he may be invited for continued service.
Mark served Laurel as its interim pastor three years ago and is anxious to renew ties with the congregation. He is originally from Los Angeles and has served in the roles of pastor, associate pastor and interim pastor for congregations in Los Angeles, Louisville, Wales (MA) and the Richmond area. Prior to coming this time to Laurel, Mark was the interim pastor for Gregory Memorial Presbyterian Church in Prince George.
Mark is married to Presbyterian teaching elder, the Rev. Janet Humphreys, who, through her program, Caring Community Educational Ministries, trains and places chaplain-candidates at hospitals in Richmond and in Washington, DC. Mark and Jan have two children, Holly and Tim. Tim just graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. Holly will be a junior at JMU in the fall in Interior Design.
Mark is excited about his new role at Laurel. He notes, “Before I served as your interim pastor and was assigned short-term specific duties to help the congregation prepare for a new pastor. Now I can minister at Laurel in a much broader way seeking to build the congregation and enhance our ministry in ways reaching in the future. I look forward to reacquaint myself with all my old friends and meet the new members of the Laurel flock as we seek what ‘new thing’ the Lord seeks to do here.”
