A theologian once informed his class members that a Bible student needs two things. He then lifted up a Bible and a copy of the morning’s newspaper, and intoned, “These two must go together!” He was suggesting that ultimately the timeless truths of Scripture must speak freshly about the important concerns of the day, and also what happens in human affairs must be held up against the ethics and values contained in the Word of God. At Laurel, we are trying out a new adult curriculum that seeks to do just that: “The Wired Word.” Each week we will study a topic taken from the headlines, examining it within both the context of its time and place and in terms of what insight the Bible may bring to bear.
Materials for the following week will be available in class and at this website. We begin this coming Sunday, January 4, and the materials for class may be downloaded below. This Sunday’s topic focuses on President Obama’s new overture to Cuba. Go to the “Adult Studies” page each week for more information. Join us for some lively conversation!
