Worship

I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord. – Psalm 122:1

Joyful, meaningful worship is central to both the Christian faith and the life of a disciple.  The Lord acts on our behalf, provides for our needs and helps us to find a better way to live: we can only respond with thanksgiving and praise and service.

Like many Presbyterian churches, the rhythm of our worship service each week consists of similar elements:  beginning with praise, then acknowledging our need for the Lord’s daily help, hearing God’s Word read from Scripture and interpreted by the pastor, and then responding by affirming our faith, prayer for God’s continued help and the opportunity to share our material blessings with those in need.

It is an ancient formula but designed to speak freshly to the needs of people today featuring uplifting hymns, inspiring anthems from our choir and laid out in a way that folks walking through the door of a church for the first time may comfortably participate.  An added feature of our worship is a projection system that displays the words to hymns, Bible readings and worship liturgy.  A paper version is also printed for those who prefer that format.  The pastor also uses the projection system for an engaging slide presentation to emphasize the points in his message.

Children and youth are invited to be part of our worshipping congregation.  We offer nursery care for infants and toddlers if the parents choose.  Children age 4-10 may take part in Children’s Church, leaving the worship service after the children’s message to engage in worship and learning guided by adult leader in a setting more appropriate for their age and interests.

We celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper each month which in other traditions is also known as Holy Communion and the Eucharist.  Worshippers participate by going to the front of the church where they receive the bread and the cup.  All who seek to trust their lives to Jesus, including children, are invited to come forward. (Those who cannot come forward are served in the pew.) You needn’t be a member of Laurel to be part of this great act of recalling the Lord’s love and grace for each of us.

We worship every Sunday at 10:00 am and the service usually lasts an hour.  On the third Sunday of each month, we host a “lingering” after worship, inviting worshippers to “linger” in our Fellowship Hall for conversation and some delicious food.  Special times of worship include Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, a community Easter Sunrise service and Thanksgiving service and Christmas Eve.

We invite you to become part of our worshipping community, discovering in it the Lord’s grace and spiritual support for the coming week!

Together in worship, we’ll center our thoughts on Christ.
