We hope you’re enjoying Mardi Gras wherever you may celebrate it. But we also want you to remember that there is a day after Fat Tuesday which begins the season of Lent. After all the revelry and eating and dancing comes the day to remember our mortality and to look inside ourselves and see where God can work in us to make us holier, purer, more humble people. That day of remembrance is Ash Wednesday. Come and join us for our Ash Wednesday Supper and Service starting at 6 pm. We’ll begin with a simple supper of soup and bread and follow it with a time of worship together. Enjoy Mardi Gras, then begin Lent with Ash Wednesday.
It is our pleasure to present our new logo for Laurel Presbyterian Church. Designed by church member and professional graphic artist Colleen MacRae, the dove with olive branch symbolizes the Holy Spirit coming with the gift of peace. The cross shape of the dove is intentional, showing the grace of God found in the cross. We are thankful to Colleen for her wonderful work and look forward to using this for years to come.
It’s time to celebrate the Christmas season and a time to reflect on God’s gift to us of Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah (Anointed One) who comes to set us free from sin and death.
Join us in celebrating the Christmas story by participating in one or more of the following worship opportunities:
December 16 at 7 p.m. is our annual Christmas Pageant. Join us as we wish Happy Birthday to Jesus.
December 23 at 10 a.m. is a chance to hear wonderful music as the Laurel Choir presents A Thrill of Hope, their Christmas Cantata.
December 24, Christmas Eve, offers two opportunities for worship. At 4 p.m. we will have our family-friendly service where children are not only encouraged to come but will be the main participants in worship. At 8 p.m. we will worship with Holy Communion and Candle Lighting, all the while celebrating the coming of the Christ-child at Bethlehem.
Christmas is about more than presents or trees or food or even family. Christmas is about God coming into our lives and our history to free us, to love us, and to save us. Join us as we celebrate Christmas this year.
The Session of Laurel Presbyterian Church is proud to introduce the Rev. Shannon O’Leary as our new Director of Children’s Ministries beginning October 1. The Director of Children’s Ministries (or DCM) is a new position at Laurel, designed to strengthen our existing children’s program during morning worship and to expand our ministries to the young by bringing in a midweek program coordinated with the Soup, Bread, and Prayer events on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. The DCM position is not meant to replace our volunteers, but to strengthen their teaching and provide creative outlets for our children to grow in their faith.
Rev. Shannon O’Leary is an ordained PC(USA) minister whose last call was as pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Stockbridge, Michigan. She brings great experience in ministry to youth and children. She served as a Young Adult Volunteer in Sitka, Alaska, serving as Director for Children and Youth of First Presbyterian Church. She served as children’s ministries coordinator at Hemphill Memorial Presbyterian Church in Stockbridge, Georgia, as well as youth minister at Rehoboth Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Georgia, during her seminary training.
Shannon is excited to live out her philosophy of children’s ministry: “Children are not the future of the church, they are a part of the church now.” She looks forward to creatively involving children in the worship and life of Laurel and to growing our capacity to do children’s ministry.
She also brings gifts and skills in working with her own children – Eva (5) and Jamie (1). She is married to our pastor, Rev. Andy Meyers. Welcome Shannon to the staff of Laurel Presbyterian Church. We look forward to what God will do through you!
A long time member of Laurel Presbyterian Church, Ruth Springer died last Monday at the age of 101. We will take time during our regular worship on Sunday, July 15, starting at 10 am to remember her and give witness to the resurrecting power of our Lord.
In preparation for that we are looking for anyone willing to do so to share their stories about Ruth and what they will remember about her. There are two opportunities for you do share. First, we will be meeting together in the church Fellowship Hall on Saturday, July 7, starting at 11 am for a time to talk, remember, and give thanks for Ruth. If you are not able to make that time, the second opportunity is to share you story with Pastor Andy via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org,
Even if you didn’t know Ruth, join us as we celebrate her life and look forward to the resurrection to come.
Join us for a baby shower celebrating the birth of Landon Cole to be held on Saturday, May 26, at 1 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Refreshments and decorations will be provided by the Member Care and Mission Team and the Youth Group. Come and celebrate new life among us!
The journey to the cross and the empty tomb is almost complete. But to get there we go through Holy Week.
The week begins with our Palm Sunday service at 10 am on April 1 starting outside the Sanctuary, where everybody will receive a palm to wave as we re-enact the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. As we celebrate his coming and look toward his death and resurrection, we will also celebrate communion together.
Holy Week continues on Maundy Thursday, April 5 at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. We will remember Jesus’ last Passover meal with his disciples and hear the words from the cross as the choir presents the choral suite “Prayers at the Cross.”
On Easter Sunday you have two opportunities to worship. At 7 am is the Glen Allen community Sunrise Service at Hungary Road Baptist Church (1733 Hungary Road). At 10 am is our traditional worship service in the Sanctuary. Come and celebrate the resurrection with us!
